Use of 'legal highs' in prison blamed for surge in violence

The Chief Inspector of Prisons has warned that 'legal highs' - such as synthetic cannabis or "spice" - are fuelling prisoner violence.

In his annual report published yesterday, Nick Hardwick described conditions in prisons as the 'worst for a decade' while flagging the serious threat of legal highs.

According to the 145-page document, there has been worsening safety in prisons since 2013, and legal highs have played a big part in increasing violence across England and Wales.
