Letter from a child

This letter is anonymous so we are unable to credit its author.  However we feel it gives a thought provoking message from a child's perspective of what they do and don't need any parent or carer to do for them. Hold onto the thought -I love you and none of us are perfect

Dear Mum & Dad

Please don’t spoil me, I know I can’t have everything I ask for - I am only trying it on.

I need to feel okay about myself, so please don’t put me down in front of people.  I’ll take more notice if you talk to me like you do to your grown up friends.

Don’t mock me or tell me I’m bad, when it’s my behaviour you don’t like.  This makes me feel worthless.

Don’t be too upset when sometimes I say “I hate you”.  It isn’t you I hate, but your power over me.

Please be patient with me …. I am growing as fast I can.

If you’ve had a bad day, please don’t take it out on me.

Please don’t shout or nag, if you do I’ll have to protect myself by pretending to be deaf.

If you tell me the things you like about me more often than those you don’t like, this helps me to feel good about myself.

Please don’t make promises you can’t keep as this makes me feel let down.

Don’t be inconsistent …. that completely confuses and muddles me.

If I feel safe to tell you how I really feel, I’ll be able to tell you more about how I really do feel.

Don’t tell me my fears are silly, they feel very real to me and it will really help me if you try to understand.

Don’t ever think you are too grown up to say sorry to me,  an apology can make me feel so much better.

Please keep reminding me that I am worthwhile so I can grow up feeling good about myself.

Please love me for who I am and not for what I do.

Don’t compare me with others or I’ll grow up never satisfied with my achievements.

Don’t forget that I need a lot of love and understanding to thrive …. but you know that don’t you?

PS I love you and none of us are perfect!!!
